Caloocan high school students undergo career counseling

MANILA, Sept. 25 (PNA) -- At least 17,877 high school students of Caloocan City are undergoing career guidance counseling to prepare them for their future careers, according to Mayor Enrico “Recom” Echiverri.

 

This after the city government organized a program designed to provide career guidance orientation to graduating high school students of 29 secondary public schools in the city from Sept. 22 to Nov. 25.

 

“The city government, through its Labor and Industrial Relations Office (LIRO), would deploy fully-trained career counselors to guide fourth year students of Caloocan City's 29 public secondary schools during the activity,” Echiverri said.

He said the series of career guidance seminars will help students choose a career according to their inclination and aptitude.

 

For his part, LIRO chief Dante Esteban noted that the topics to be discussed include: How to profit from tertiary education; how to enhance one’s employability; how to improve study skills, self-evaluation, critical thinking, problem solving, communication skills, time management, team work, negotiation, assertiveness; how to deal with problems, and leadership issues.

“During the program, students can ask career questions, get a perspective on the day-to-day issues they would face in the university and eventually in the workplace, learn about different career options, and more,” the LIRO chief explained.

Esteban said the event is being organized as part of the Career Guidance Orientation for 4th Year Students by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) and Department of Education (DepEd)-Caloocan.

He added that besides encouraging the students to explore job opportunities in the self-employed and the private sectors, Mayor Echiverri hopes to institutionalize the conduct of the career guidance orientation program in the city. (PNA)
